TO PAY OR NOT TO PAY- RENT IS THE QUESTION

April 1, 2020

Have you suffered a financial hardship due to COVID-19?  Have you been laid off? Have your hours been severely cut? Is your place of business still open?  Do you need to take care of a dependent during the time you would normally have been able to work due to school closures? Are there less opportunities for you to make money in your field due to COVID-19? Have you been quarantined due to the virus or are you immune compromised?  If the answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you have undoubtably heard of rent relief, eviction holds, etc.  but may be unsure how to go about putting these into play.  It’s ok, you’re not alone.

Right now, it’s a lot of talk and not a lot of action.  The only person who can put these into action is YOU and you should act fast as rent is due in a few days.

Below is a timeline of events impacting renters, all links are connected to the Governors site and include executive orders, links to assistance and further information.

3/24- Executive Order Delaying Evictions for Renters, 120 days

3/26- Electric Utility Relief Package

3/27- Announcement of $5 Million fund to assist those struggling to make rent

3/31- Announced a cooperative agreement with state banks to protect small businesses and families from foreclosure

To request rent relief from a landlord, property management company or owner, you must provide the following:

Once you have a written statement to your landlord, I would suggest calling them if possible.  Open the lines of discussion and be willing to negotiate the terms of your lease.  Remember that your landlord also may have a mortgage and may not have mortgage relief in place yet.  It may be necessary to discuss reimbursement terms or how to extend your lease, this does not mean you will not be responsible for this missed rent amount at some time.

The reality of the executive orders and relief packages is they are not specific, they are not meant to address every scenario and they take work from each individual wishing to utilize them.

If you have been impacted financially due to COVID-19, you should absolutely seek out this assistance and relief.
